2019 SUMMER SCREENING PROGRAM

Dear Families and Teachers,

The Tennessee School for the Blind offers a Summer Screening Program to children ages 3-5 years with a visual impairment. Children with additional disabilities are accepted.

What is the purpose of the program?

The purpose of the Summer Preschool Evaluation Program is designed as an arena assessment to assess your child’s functional vision as well as additional screenings in the areas of speech and language, classroom skills, physical therapy, occupational therapy, psychological, and orientation and mobility. While the children are being assessed, the parents/guardians will participate in training sessions with topics related to children with visual impairments. Involvement in the program in no way obligates enrollment into the Tennessee School for the Blind. At the end of all the sessions, reports are written with recommendations for the families and school programs.

Where is the program?

The program is held on the campus of the Tennessee School for the Blind. Housing and meals are provided free-of-charge.

When is the program?

The program sessions take place during the month of June. On the application there are dates listed for your preferred time. The sessions run for two days with a meeting at the end to review results. The session times are from 8-2 with a break in the middle for lunch and rest time. Families staying on campus move into the cottage the night before their session.

Adults & family members:

Other adults involved with the child are welcome to attend. If there are siblings staying on campus during this time a relative or friend of the family must care for them during the time of the assessment and training. All visitors to the TSB Campus must present their driver’s license or state ID to be screened by the Raptor system. If anyone screened has a major criminal offense on their record, it is possible they could be denied access to the TSB Campus.

How to apply:

Request a referral form from Tennessee School for the Blind Outreach. The referral form needs to be signed by the special education supervisor or TEIS coordinator. The referral form is sent to Gloria Armstead. Once received the application can be downloaded from the following link: https://www.tsbtigers.org/tsb-outreach-services/32-outreach-services/6-tsb-outreachservices.html. Scan and email or mail completed application to Gloria Armstead. We are limited in the number of children who can be seen for screening (two per two-day session). Priority is given based on order in which applications are received.

Guidelines for the program can be found at the following link:
