During an afternoon meeting of the faculty and staff on Friday, October 20th, Dr. Martin surprised attendees with a wonderful announcement. Tennessee School for the Blind had received the “Designation of Exemplary” under the school accountability criteria for the State of Tennessee during the 2016-17 school year. He had just received news of the honor earlier that morning and was under orders to keep it in confidentiality until 12:00 p.m. The announcement left great cause to celebrate. After praising the staff for their high accomplishment, Martin went on to encourage everyone to keep up the good work. “You know what this means, don’t you?” he said. “The bar has now been set high, and we must continue giving our best to maintain our level of excellence.” In a token of celebration and appreciation, the staff was given refreshing ice cream treats as they departed the meeting.
The celebrating continued throughout the month with the clinic staff spearheading the festivities. “We are so proud of our team,” said Kathy Craft. “Exemplary designation doesn't happen every day.” On Monday, October 30th, the nurses invited the school to celebrate the achievement. Between 1:00-3:00 p.m., cookies, cupcakes, punch, and lots of appreciation were served to all who visited the clinic. A great time was had celebrating the success of the team!
