get started with setting up my screen share we're going to get started I think even if anyone drinks and can you catch up with us so if I'm on if you can just drop the links are bet credit is professional we're so glad that you're here with us today to talk about teaching and professional development I was just kind of a an intro we're really excited that this is the kickoff of them Unity Virtual Academy which is a collaboration between the Vanderbilt program the Tennessee School for the Blind and twice monthly it might end up being more than as we get a schedule together online professional development and we're also starting a quarterly Vision educator Consortium and our first meeting at the end of January I know you guys are probably already signed out but if you haven't please do we're looking forward to preview the quarterly meeting for all TV eyes on him as doctors in the state to come together and talk about issues for having no resources that are coming out and all that kind of stuff as a bit of an introduction to myself I'm Doctor Rachel's plus I am the new professor of practice in the Vanderbilt program here and actually did my own some of my own skin teaching at the Tennessee School for the Blind and a special shout-out to Kelly who I did my student teaching here today so thanks Kelly always with a couple friends faces in the crowd and so I so I so I just I'm just so interesting how Services look berries from seed to State Board office so much from District to District I really my kind of Auto is working smarter not harder and I know someone so much work together and support each other as much because of the nature of our job whether I'm good working smarter not harder and I'm really happy to have Madeline 2 today to helping me or for them to be with me and I'll let Madeline hi everybody I'm Madeline I'm a master student here at Vanderbilt and the visual impairment program I so got my initial teacher licensure at Vanderbilt and the severe disabilities to program so I had a special place in my heart for students who also have multiple and severe disabilities I through that program I've had some experience teaching in Metro School Sumner County Schools I recently had a practicum placement at Tennessee School for the Blind and then I grew up in Texas just down the street from Texas School for the Blind and Visually and bird and have spent three Summers working in their summer Outreach programs first as a teaching assistant and then as a teacher and I'm really excited to be here with Rachel I'm very passionate about this and that'll be here so we're just the agenda account of the overview of what we're going to talk about where sources development opportunity resources podcast lessons for students and resources and then just want to say just feel free to use the chat box if there's resources that we talked about that you've used if you like them or didn't like them or an office you were going to hold questions and we're going to have a good amount of time at the end as I told my students I'm a better teacher if your video is on but I also respect that there are many valid reasons to have your camera off and it's been a long day for you all so you know feel free to keep your camera off and then maybe a few if you feel camera ready when it comes time for discussion I feel free to turn your camera on then it's it's really up to you so for the Google sites where you can download the PowerPoint Anna will also be dropping the links that were visiting so lots of options there and yeah I think with that will come get started and the first is are these Mega resources so I'm not alone and I weren't sure what else to call these other than they really give you the most bang for your buck day provide resources to support ourselves Professionals for students in for families in person I'm learning during the pandemic and the first one is the Colorado Department of Education website specifically for visual impairment including they have some really great options around it ability remote teaching support and specific to our city population so I'm going to do is this is one of the websites that we actually liked so much that we wanted to take you guys to it so as you bear with me as I switch the screen that I'm sharing so now I think you I think thumbs up Madeline if you're seeing the right what time is the eye blindness and within it though lots of South links that send you to ask around accessibility General accessibility options you know for our resources on you or your students learn even if you need to know family is need support learning how to use it at home now too and then for remote teaching as you can see just a wealth of options here whether it's around General resources for teaching home activities lesson exam specially designed instruction around for two additional disabilities jeans blindness and then a whole bunch of CDI resources as well so again this is why we call it one of the options there so moving back to my power points was being productive thank you updated and now it's doing weird things a little back east and hit Michigan their Department of Education low incidence Outreach has resources around very similar to Michigan's but even they have other options for lessons when I give it he's four they've recorded at a way to wealth and resources that they recorded and a whole host of resources and their seams additional resources are around so there's those options and then within one another PDF PDF to conducting essential assessment probable of problematic but I just thought it was an interesting way that they broke it down to it now can you take you to National look I'm sure you guys are all familiar with the national Center on deaf blindness and they have so many great resources available to the first is all of the post the link We included here is the link to their current offering but they also have literally years worth of webinars that our archives. Next one is key topic families perfectly round covid-19 resources like Steve I'm just line project but all so I think there's some good resources there for you know I need to be out in the field and lastly of course don't forget that project development if you're if you're not already on like their email list for looking out you know I got a little more closer to home next up being around to California I wanted to take you guys to this website but honestly it's such a long list we would just be scrolling for days they have the broken it down really easy-to-use website they have a whole table for each of these actions a table of online classes and webinars including human literacy math and social studies adapted PE resources and really important War and so well worth checking out that website it's a pretty simple design and everything's a real easy to just scroll through and see what their option is a webinar that was recorded back I'm home is a powerful place for learning with the title it was a collaboration between the nationally our organization and dvi-d be with the council for exceptional the division on visual impairment are voice of the table where parents of children with visual impairments are presented on how they were creating learning environments during the early months of the pandemic and resource to hear the parents perspectives so for us to CBI to know where the families are coming from isolation that comes with social distancing we often lose sense of how other people are surviving powerful and foolish are so that wraps up our are Mega resources next up onto professional development opportunities for tvi the first one is b a p h I mean and here I just pulled straight from their website so I'm just going to read it to you they say it's their One Stop Shop or your One-Stop shop or resource for Meaningful Education and Training webinars to get the most out of a p services for tutorials on their new products and hacks on how to get the most out of your beloved they have resources and services for whether you're using it at home. and what I think is interesting to the time is that you can get credit for when if you attend their life presentations and actually did it 10 two weeks ago and it was really interesting and I'm running now so next up is actually another a peach resource which is the AP and so what they do is that these courses are designed for parents students and consumers to gain information with the iso each courses either single or multiple videos that can range from 5 minutes to several hours and what done here and I'm just going to take you to the website 7 kph is a great resource but they've your website is you sometime so I'm so this is the EPA type website and they've broken assessment which is a set of horses Matheson tools by which Educators Educators good which is covering from birth to 5 include the activities and then the Core Curriculum which is basic educational priority and then some stuff and so you're like so I just cook easy see and then what happens is that there's all of these options here so for sensory efficiency they have magnification for all you do is click and rolled and then you just registered so you have to do a couple cookies to get to where you want to go but lots of good things there now I just kind of wrap up there's no more so you're with the tivity Fugi Outreach I think it's the one hour long session where if if recorded webinars are not so much your thing and you want some live interaction with other Vision folks this is a great off so I'm here we have links to current scheduling registration links to pass session and the 15 is this the last week here I'm in Hot Topics every every session has a specific topic or theme and so we have some for second cuz she's actually attended one so yeah so I attended the distance considerations for birth to three and I thought it was a really engaging and interesting discussion it was very much a collaborative format they had a speaker present on her experiences with distance considerations that was a a t v i in Austin and then she opened it up and discussion and there was a whole lot of cat collaboration and highly recommended if you're looking for something where it's like you can talk with other professionals and hear about what's going on in the field thank you so much last Enduro there's a few other states that are doing sessions like that that we've listed them at the end is a Perkins School for the Blind in Massachusetts has a huge list of recorded presentation actually I think they've been ripped concessions for years and more recently play makes it great for us and some of them were attended or every year MEP their annual meeting and it is just a very rich collection of really up-to-date resources and if it happens to be the first or second week of October every year I attended but they did for their annual meeting and what they've actually done for the day October 2020 annual meeting is created a playlist on YouTube so the entire I think every second full days of multi sessions going on so many many resources that you've been getting lots of emails about this like I have but AER is really growing a collection of webinars that are free for members I think if you're not a member some sessions you can attend but it's like 20 or $30 in some read a free one number or not and the recently kind of announced that they'll be there probably in early 2021 I'm currently webinars are only live and not archiving record but in the future you've been talking now for about 20 minutes straight so just I do this with my students in class and so if you just need to take 30 seconds stretch out standoff in a long day I'm sure for everyone so just take a little mental break take out headphones so the next section we're going to talk about our podcast and some of us those of us spending a lot of time in so I would say today is considering using a podcast you know working on managing and viable or whatever device and then the content of the podcast self there are podcast for own professional development so the first one is one that I really like her kind of recommend everyone is called It's my job and the purpose of this podcast is that in every episode of the visual impairment has interviewed an adult and it's all about their career and education so their link here goes to Perkins website where they've been hosting a lot of the podcast so anyways first one is seen in the Virgin Islands interviewed Mark Reichert who is a lawyer and policy expert who is currently the interviewed a woman who is a graduate student studying investigative journalism and beat him and she's actually also paralympian writer and it just so great hearing Stevens going to end interview with adult so lots of good content the next one is hardly has a podcast called Hadley presents and this podcast is primarily targeted at adults so I would say kind of explore their collection in the sky if episodes are suited for things just if you wanted to learn a bit of technology or if they are good to share with your stuff is expensive. and so a sense of Texas is from yes baby I and a new episode actually just was released today you can sign up and get email and Robin Keating Clark who is Queen of the SEC and overseas if you're familiar with that Facebook group I'm out of Robin Keating Clark about 9 mvcc so that was today instapure is for just a couple of digital podcast and is even more that I've learned about his life together but the apple variety of topics and then there's a website that the industries for the Blind and Visually Impaired now before we move on is just a here so just thought that you might have you might use the resources we've shared so far there are three to one is just giving you guys a you think about three things you've learned about two things that you to the website for resources that you might want to try out and if you have a question and so we're just going to give you all like maybe like 30 sec and when you're ready or I'm a prompt if you want to just drop a resource that you're looking to try out hey. So when you're ready if you want to just drop in the chat what you're in checking out Kelly is interested in the covid stats I understand some folks might just be more listening than watching the presentation so just give everyone at another 15 seconds if you want to drop it I'm Jennifer is looking forward to diving into the Colorado website Tammy wants to also Colorado Judy also Colorado Colorado also Julia to Colorado's worst I think I'm so I'm going to stop sharing my screen and turn it over to Madeline for the next from here give me a thumbs up if you can see what's going on all right so I'm going to start with talking about some covid specific resources for students these are specifically for students with VI some of them but I thought they were just helpful for having some of these conversations and communicating some some things that like even adults don't really stand right now so the first side is about facilitating conversations and I know we're all probably tired of talking about covid by county is helpful for some Centrex that people have put out about having some of these time for conversation so the CDC put out a resource about talking with children about coronavirus and then the anxiety and depression Association of a put out a resource about how to talk to your anxious child or teen about coronavirus and I thought that was just a really good resource because our students like they are struggling with mental health issues normally and Cobra just makes things so much harder and I think having these conversations in an educated way is just it's so important in the last that I had here from the Department of Education is has got some good information it's very dense it's a little bit hard to navigate so I would say recommend this resource if you're having conversations with your IEP team about what's required right now during covid times so if you're looking for something about like legally what should we be doing what are the requirements during this. It's might be good but otherwise it's not a great General resources mostly if you have specific questions and then I found three different places that have some really great social stories about healthy behaviors with covid and I think these are really good resources to use for students or for students who might have trouble having more word conversations about covid-19 resource Central has a lot of a bit a bit pretty big Resource Bank of these social stories that one is great because there's some stories in Spanish so if Spanish-speaking students. Could be a place to pull from Pathfinders we're going to go to in just a second has a great Bank of resources and then this last resource I'd have here it's helping your child wear a face mask that was put out by Rutgers University and I I think it's got some great tips if you got some students that are struggling with face masks right now so I'm going to stop in Bessemer Pathfinders all right can we see it so this is a finder's Paris resources social stories and storybooks so they just have this list here of lots of different stories I've you can see the ones that are in red are ones that I've already checked out and read through and it is helpful if you are looking for videos as well they've got some video story book so if your students prefer that format this could be helpful and that one pulled up it's the what you need about coronavirus adult social story book in this is from Gigi's playhouse but it was it was part of that Resource Bank buy Pathfinders so it's just this fun social story about Quran coronavirus social story about coronavirus that could be appropriate if you have younger students or older students that might have additional listen Tony's it's developmentally and age-appropriate for that it's not not going to baby it or then but it is contained some of that important information so I would really record checking out some of these stories on my next section is 4 is about lessons and activities around the house so some of these are more academic lessons or ACC lessons and then some of them are fun activities are activities that kids can do at home or active they can learn some daily living skills and I just want to remind you all that the mega resources had a lot of these so if you're coming later to look at this Tower point for prepared license like I would also recommend look the mega mega resources okay so the first one we have is by nfb it's their distance education resource website it's got some great lesson plans and they do a fair amount of interactive lessons that they conduct over as you and one of my favorite things that I'm going to show you as they have lots of links to videos of excellent Braille readers which I think can be great too students who are learning Braille exam like models of reading this is the nfb website for distance education resources so they've got a couple example activities they have links to YouTube videos for interactive lessons and this is the part I really wanted to highlight which is the real story time they say if you want to have a real children to have the opportunity to see Flint real readers in action I'm here some videos of blind people reading stories and burial each story has an activity that you and your child can do to take the learning to the next level so I think that could be great to incorporate in a formal a person or just share with family so that kids can it on their own and then they got some good how to activities and they've got a variety of of levels of activity so I recommend checking our next resource is the Excel Academy and this is a Virtual Lab The Hop and Tuesdays Wednesdays and Thursdays and like with some of our other resources there's a big webinar bank that you can check out that have some some great activities so some of our past I could actually Square cookie without looking communicating about visual impairment and handling those not-so-fun uncomfortable situations and understanding my breast so they have a really good kind of rest of content so if you're looking for act like ideas for activities or attractions like activities that they can follow along on a video this is a great resource and then we've got three more prices for some of these prepared activities 70s baby I put out a Google doc that is lesson plans for home these I thought would be really fun to share with parents they're kind of team building Style activities so really just improving morale while doing educational activity with parents and students and then passed illiteracy has another stay-at-home activity bank they have tips and lessons about cooking open around the house craft slitter scales they also have a section on tips for learning with for those with additional disabilities so if you have additional disability might be something that you want to check out and then resource isn't specifically designed for students with VI but it has been recommended by tsbvi and the person Brad Winer has put out a lot recommendations for adapted PE and activities that would be appropriate for students with a variety of disabilities and then just pausing here to say that if you're working with a student in Tennessee who's learning remotely you can get instructional Resource Center material sent directly to your students home and you can do that by contacting contacting itsd she's the director accessible instructional materials and Outreach Services all right our next section is games and apps that can be used for instruction and learning and also just fun this first stop is a more comprehensive one or first website its objective add it's a digital curriculum impairments and they've got some great lessons on Owen demme on assistive Tech and then on Breiel and let her see skills this is a paid resource so that is something to consider but it's got a lot of good comprehensive lessons so if you're looking for something that's a little bit more in-depth rather than something that mental I would check out of jacked event this next one is just a fun math app for math website it's by PBS KIDS cyberchase Railway Hero game it is super all you can adjust pretty much every feature of this game you can adjust audio color or contrast put you can put on descriptions you can do voice over the whole thing can be navigated through the keyboard I'm pretty sure it can be navigated to the switch to buy so if you have a student that uses a switch it can be great for that students can use it to learn some of the early numeracy skills but as you complete challenges against more advanced and so I you can I dress like a fair Affair range of possibilities with this game but it's it's a fun one to check out I tried it out and it's it is really think if you have slowed NFL Super Bowl this next app is reading Adventure Time it's an iPod app specifically designed for students with visual impairments and blindness and it is meant to work on literacy in Braille skills it's a free app you can get it in the App Store now it can be used one account can be used for multiple students so if your stew doesn't have their own personal iPad you can download it on your teacher iPad and I have different accounts for your students so that is pretty helpful so far next area is General resources for families in classroom teachers to some of these resources are ones that we thought would be really helpful for families our classroom teachers but didn't necessarily fit and some of our previous categories so this first one is a is tsbvi families together it's a group that is organized by sppi in Texas and it's a fan the only group for family adult family members but it's children who are visually impaired or deaf blind and I think it's a it's a really good supportive group so if you got some families that are interested in getting connected this is a great way to do it then me every Tuesday at 2 p.m. I'm not really sure what it's going to look like over the holidays but I anticipate that they're going to continue in some form at and they will be back because families really seem to love this group so the next resource that I found was put out by the Maryland Public Schools Department of Education and it's a document and it's about considerations for blind and stuff Jeff students during remote learning and it's definitely was geared towards like teachers of visually impaired and teachers of ducking Harden here but there was some component of it that I thought would be really helpful that you can share with classroom teachers and so we're going to go check it out you see my screen so this is the document it's providing a continuity of learning to death hard of hearing blind low vision and deaf blind students during it's got a lot of great information. General considerations for the changing role of by tonight teachers and other staff and planning for accessibility of instructional material great stuff for us as practitioners and then this is what I got really excited about this table and it is considerations for instructional format first line students in death students it's a really digestible table that I think you could probably borrow and adapt as you see fit and share with some of the classroom teachers that you're working with because it's organized by instructional format considerations for blind students and considerations for Deaf students and it has really simple like not drive any tips for provide destruction via print recorded lessons and live instruction and I thought that this could be really helpful thing that you can share and then we have a few other additional resources for families that you can check out we're not going to goes to Britton death in them today but our Center has a lot of really helpful modules and they've made one for parents supporting their student during covid and then Texas AJ Education Agency released some resource it's about distance learning as well and then again Iris put out a list of children's books portraying individuals with disabilities best GI and a fineness and then additional disabilities so that's a great thing if you want incorporate into your lessons teaching visually impaired has a lot of really good rest resources that you can check out and then CBI Scotland is just has a wealth of information about rituals the CBI and things that you can can use in a sentence with that and it's also it's geared towards families and other teachers if you want to appoint families in that direction and then if you're sure we've got the California School for the Blind as a Tuesday to you but you're somewhere to some of those other like esbi coffee hours and for it also has some regularly scheduled trainings and then if you just keep the fact that we no there's no way we could have gotten all the helpful resources that are out there so we want to know what we forgot so if you're free to drop the name or link when you really like too much hot box or also to the bottom Link in the tropics right now is access to a Google doc what we've created is basically a living document Worth or something we forgot or something that you really like you're free to go to the Google. And then also you use the it's just a resource you know for us in Tennessee will be repeating this presentation on Wednesday and so you know in the next day or two add what you use that we didn't mention and then on Wednesday last books. Also with Dave we've missed that they use and then you do maybe for yourself I'm on Thursday or Friday check to see what's going on and then just use that as an ongoing resource and then two in the butt want to take the baby the next 10 minutes or so just to talk about discussion and so I've we put these resources question these questions out here just as conversation starters but really we just want to open the floor so maybe questions you might want to think about answering or talking about is what resources stood out to you during the presentation and then in terms of the resources you know if there's something that you want to check out for your own professional or to use as a lesson with students on board as share with families and along these lines to it's so easy and I know myself I fall into this trap all the time I go to a conference presentation loverly to land at 1 but we're already dealing and just where we were at we can't necessarily thinking about what you want to check out that we share today what barriers do you foresee and then how how can we may be problems stuff together to think about how we can work around this area so is that we're going to stop show ice cream so we can all see each other and feel free to eat yourself and or turn on your video and just tell Tammy thank you check out the Google Doc and thank you Anita had asked a question earlier in the presentation just asking whether the webinar will be archived and where they can find it so we're not sure if we're going to make the recording itself available but the PowerPoint itself is available through the Google Website going again to the website and on the website but also model put together a great Excel spreadsheet pretty much almost all the resources we talked about and I'm actually we have some time I need on my computer so I'll just share my screen real quick so this is the spreadsheet that I don't put together for us where I'm at you know the print is very small on your screen but basically just the list of all the reefs purses with the link and then breaking into the categories that we've talked about activities around the house and you can't living skills tips for accessible technology literacy resources so if you don't want to spend time clicking to the whole PowerPoint you can also just download the spreadsheet and kind of have a quick look at you know what resources I'm seeing you guys in the shop which is great so Juliet you mentioned the onm podcast Bound for adventure is not instructor and it's good for elementary or middle school students and that you've used bits and pieces mixed into some of your virtual lessons and it's a nice break from Utah I can definitely understand. So it's not a straight like so I think that the number to the podcasts Judy you mentioned that you love the opportunity to share lesson plans and videos with families and that Kelly likes the autism Resource Center social stories if there's some really great I'm not the Pathfinder website they're just dumb so many great books for kids to do any other thoughts or questions about Richard thank you thank you Kelly okay so it seems like also to I know it's nearly 8 p.m. or 9 p.m. if you're in Eastern Time you've all probably been on and working for over 12 hours today so I'm just going to share my screen pulling up so well the last night we have today I'm in in a few links I'm the last one which is a redcap survey if you can please make sure to save that link we've shared the the Google site to download all we have of Madeline in mind if you wanted to follow up and then I'm I didn't bother putting that URL if you need a certificate or whether it's just for regular I'm just going to give her 10 minutes tell you something like that or if you specifically need a CRV to please follow the the Red Cap survey if you have the required sections or just your contact info and what kind of certificate you need and then optional questions or just to help us make we're planning out more and more professional.
