text to thank you again for joining us we're going to be talking about summer camp at Unity School Unity Academy is a collaborative Endeavor between people for the Brian the Vanderbilt Peabody Vision program and I'm really excited even though we're in the thick of January now to put on a presentation all about summer camp options for so is that I'm going to turn it over to start or are Peabody students and they'll give an overview of different kind of isn't sharing the screen all right as doctor's office just said that we are in our first year at the visions in shock at Vanderbilt and we are doing the summer camp options for students with visual impairments my name is Melissa Hawkins my name is Aaron McGrath my name is Agent Lou and thank you so much for having us today as we percent and then just for the agenda the meeting just like doctor so I just kind of went over we did camps in a variety of areas around the United States I'm in Tennessee and Southeast just break up a separate sections and then at the end we will be opening up the questions or anything but we're also on each side that we Preserve on each Camp will be adding a link to the camp and their website in the chat so if you're interested and what we're going through each side wanting to glance at that you are more than welcome to do that as well okay so again my name is there and grab that I'm going to be talking about the Champs in Tennessee so the first Camp option is Easter Seals Tennessee and this one's are pretty close Lowe's in Brentwood so the mission of this Jam it's a day camp that provides a safe and fun environment for children living with disabilities so they can recreate great things explore outdoors and make you cry a lot of really fun activities that they make super inclusive for students with a plethora of disabilities and that includes canoeing or tree ropes drama activities arts and Stephen just called so there's a lot of super fun think that these kids can get involved and they have two different options so they have at an adult camp which is worse you or individual 17 and up so this could be a good option for students that might be in special education programs that are until they're 21 and they have a bunch of different and a lot of the same activities this adult program is for people physical disabilities developmental disabilities and traumatic brain injuries and then the Youth Camp is ages 5 to 17 the schedule for this isn't exactly me yeah because of covid and everything going on on they don't have dates just yet but it's all inclusive camp and campers are split by age and gender they're mixed with typically development typically developing. and other individuals with disabilities and the good thing about Easter Seals is that the camper to counselor ratio is about 123 students are getting a lot of attention Joy also the next camp in Tennessee is called the Empower me Center this is in Wilson County Tennessee for the purpose of this Camp is to transform size of individuals with disabilities through recreational educational and therapeutic activities the age range is from 5 to 21 years of age all the stories are welcome it's very accessible Camp the ratio for staff campers is once too so it's even more specialized this is a six-week program in summer and other year-round activities the center hosts in a personalized activities to me behavioral and medical ends of certain individuals that have summer camps one day camps and then they have like activities throughout the year like and then another camp for any in Tennessee is bridges for deaf and hard-of-hearing and this Camp specifically could be really good for June to order wine the ages are from birth to the adult years as in Memphis Tennessee so their purpose is to build access Equity inclusion for the deaf community and are appearing throughout the education and empowerment this Camp specifically works a lot with interpreting services send Using local sign language interpreters and community service so they have these things called game days which are on the second Friday of each month from 10 to 2 and I have a client advocacy work Excel classes community events they work with families and employers job training navigation and other things to these this is a really good activity for Stanley Stein and soon to maybe Duck wine to be more in touch with communication and so this Camp has like to sub camps kind of and so there's the camp sign me up this is like a camp that allows the deaf Community to have a fun interactive summer day camp and they learn how to build Marquee civity version to her or hard of hearing and then there's camp rise and shine and it's a two-week a B I think it used to be a weekend Sleepaway Camp and now it's like a day camp and they focus on building friendships and communicating with other people and then the last one for Tennessee is called Camp Conquest so and this is Sir a different cam where it's like set up differently different weeks they have different disabilities that are served so as you can see there's a bunch of different disabilities is actually physical disabilities the cost for this Camp is $675 and the location is in Millington Tennessee right and now care I'm in the Southeast we looked at you can go next size during our first camp that we looked at in the Southeast is call Camp abilities the location specifically that we looked at is in Woodstock Georgia on Camp abilities is also around the United States and other areas as well the camp for this year and like Ryan said the dates are kind of ball jumbled with covid and stuff but as of right now July 21st through the 24th is what they were looking at online it's a residential camp for the week so the students are the individual well stay at the camp so looking for more Independence there and then the mission of Camp abilities is to teach campers to be participation in sports and get out there and improving their health and well-being through activities many different sports are available it's beat baseball goalball gymnastics training track and field and archery and then in terms of Jess eligibility wise ages 9 to 19 must have a diagnosis of visual impairment like I said predominately independent just because it is more no medical condition that requires a full-time nurse and displays behaviors that allows them to function in group settings not just in one-on-one with her counselors and registration deadline right now as of March 1st and that's just the email if you're interested the next camp that we looked at in the Southeast is also in Georgia I'm Waycross Georgia known as Georgia Lions Camp for the blind this is also residential camp for the week and this is June July 2022 as they expect no set dates for right now and their mission is to provide opportunity to felt more positive attitudes towards an advocate for self-advocacy with their own disability I'm learning to accept that you know it's okay though be positive and accept your disability just as others enable the camp to learn except ways of competing and cooperating with others simulating a greater Independence self-reliance advocacy resourcefulness and initiative and learning new skills and exploring once in actual abilities making sure that they combine their Nets and to provide opportunities for understanding and appreciation through the environment and this Camp also. town of activities not just sports-related but getting out there in the natural environments or arts and crafts Dance Challenge shows fishing spear competition is campfire swimming adopted and so many more on their website I'm a man just the eligibility piece behind Georgia Line's Camp their visual Acuity of 2070 best Drive ages 6 to 17 and 18 plus for certain sessions and registration starts March 20-22 and Camp Administration does do financial assistance sometimes and then I think lastly for the southeast is space camp for interested visual impairment students this is held in Huntsville Alabama at u.s. Space and Rocket Center I like this quote off of their website from the alumni that went to this camp and they said just because I can't see the stars doesn't mean I can't reach for that and I think that such an empowering quote for n it has their Vision or not and this is a week-long camp that takes place their registration is open until September 12th Camp runs from September 18th to 12 3rd and there's three different programs robotics Advance Academia Academia Camp Academy and all of the aviation programs there are scholarships that can be given receiving funding and scholarships for specific programs and then the individual is responsible for paying that difference in cost and then just a little bit more about space camp coordinated by TV ice and cells which is really neat and they have a lot of accessibility features the students use computers that have adopted in large print output materials and equipment used during missions are available in Braille and large print as well and then for participatory students participate fully and each student is Scream stop there I medical condition okay this is each and Luke I'm going to introduce the camps throughout the unit United States. the first of the first time I'm going to introduce is cod High Brook lodge learning Camp without I cleverman beissinger is a camp Pacifica Define for the people with beer in Hemet is Construction the orientation and Mobility skills required for a guy that can learn and develop also prepare themselves prepared the fitness and endurance necessary for the guy that travels up and down there a lot of laughing about it how to live with a bicycling okay electric Olivia Pam temperature need to be between 14 to 24 years old with severe impairment and the deadline is to be determined at that we missed like please feel free to share the link to the camp in The Choppa so everyone can see this is Tammy I know from TSP we have had several students that have attended the space camp in Huntsville we traditionally send what two to three students a year haven't had an opportunity obviously to do that in the last couple of years so hopefully again next year but the kids come back it is amazing for them they just love it so much we had I know at least one student probably more you have been to the extreme camps as well I'm thinking about Anthony he's been to that the I think we've got some kid I know plenty of several adults your work with the camp abilities I think Alan is said that he had worked there as well so in the one that I thought about was the I Retreat that's in the South Carolina Eye the one that dr. chase does that would be an option for 1 to add as well for it but I'm I'm pressing kit cye I think it's like I Retreat or some like that it's in South Carolina for students during the North Carolina Carolina so thank you Alan but I was thinking of that b i r Kids of the attended several of those and I really enjoyed it awesome thank you so much I found the I Retreat and visiting Youth Empowerment so I put the I just wanted to add to what you said about the space camp I actually had a seen his face camp when it was not the vision week because the camp runs your long and even though it wasn't division week 6 year accommodating for her anyways so just to throw it out there that I think it's great for students to go to space camp with any time of the year they make you a phenomenal. yeah and I've been to camp abilities I volunteered there when I was getting trained or in one of those Summers and it's fantastic like you know you're not a camper when you go to Camp abilities your your athlete and people working with them are coaches and so just like that by removing a certain label you you're almost Empower just bite by hearing you're an athlete which many of the kids that we work with you know they're not giving that benefit of thinking of themselves or having others think of them as someone who you know does the sport there just Spectators are participating or whatever and I'm so we just depending on the camp you know there's just a large variety of you no physical activities that they can participate in that that you know they may not have your access to in bear in their home schools and so actually you know a lot of these camps you work with folks who are studying to be adaptive PE teachers and so there's an Army Of Orcs you're learning how to accommodate its hours in their future jobs which is really fantastic and so yeah I would highly recommended if you ever have a student who might be interested in getting more physical activity places to go starting up in New York 1 in Suny Brockport and really spread throughout the Northeast and then all across the country and internationally now which is pretty cool call someone and know their internet location so thank you for sharing that it's nice to have one in the South are normally not in the South are there normally in the Northeast and Northwest so it's nice to have one in the stuff hi this is Tiffany Kelly with Vocational Rehabilitation blind and deaf services and I was so excited to hear all these camps that's great information and I'll be sharing that with my team but we serve ages 14 and up but I was going to shower I saw bridges for the deaf and hard-of-hearing on there and they have them in the Memphis office but they also have a Nashville office and there can't I have there actually one of our grantees through this day we have a great one and so we belong in a lot in that we get a lot of feedback on that camp that you shared about and I'll say they haven't the option I think for virtual they have some camps / 2.2 so they are doing some things possibly during the summer too but I'm happy to share the information if I can find it thank you so much I think if no one else has anything else to discuss I think that that concludes our part of the session but yeah if anyone like wants a copy of this I can doctor says I can send you a pdf version sorry I'm overcoming the covid-19 get the covid cough that's what that's about I'll try to mute myself so and I kind of pull together a PowerPoint we really want to showcase our kids and what we do so you're actually going to see several pictures that of what the kids are actually doing at Camp because we feel that part of it the other piece that we want another piece that we want to bring to light is there is a lot of paperwork and we are sticklers for the paperwork and I don't know how else to say it so if you do have a family that decides to attend so we do have full-time nursing 24/7 nursing at her school so during Camp you know students with disabilities medications you know those medical concerns we can we're happy to accept the students and work with the students but if the right things aren't in they can't attend we have actually turn students away for that reason so as we go through this PowerPoint we want to definitely talk to you about the great things also to know they're the little bitty details so whenever if you do have a parent that decides to you know allow their student to come you may need to look at their application before they turn it in because a lot of times parent will leave things off I will have parents that can't tell us the name their kids TV I so they don't know the name of the other students and their child's eye condition so those little things like there are helpful to us so we're going to I'm going to share my screen with you and Auntie are just kind of going to jump off back and forth with each other if that's okay sorry guys a close this you back up so it doesn't cost anything to come to our camp because of the Lions Club around the state of Tennessee date split the bill for all this so I just wanted to get that out there first because there's not a cost for it and it's a residential and everything's paid for so get that out there so this is the only picture I could find of Andy and I even the animals so but this was just one of the things that we had we had a farm that came out and did animals but that's our contact information if you need to reach us this will be our we've worked a this will be a fourth of five years that we've gotten an opportunity to work together so we have a lot of things kind of down to a science at this point you know we talked about like a import a lot of our campers we realize it's very first time they've been able to interact with other students who have visual impairments or even the same visual impairments they realize they're not alone and we have heard those words come out of the mouths of our campers oh I've never met someone so it's been a great opportunity for students like we said just to interact with other students who are like them this year we're going to be offering three weeks camp Week 1 gin stay after the time you can look at it and they will describe but depending on the week is depending on the activity and the age of the student that's going on the numbers that are on there are raid levels entering grey levels they're not age their grade levels in the reason that we do that is because of student you know could be in 12th grade for multiple years if they're going to school up through H22 so that's why we can't 12th grade on there so we're going to go through some of that weeks really quickly during week one we do offer gray 75 students with alternative that are on the altar academic or portfolio program an opportunity to come to camp and again we do the small activity we grouped them with peers who are similar in age and function that also peers who are a who are of the same age as well so we'll do a lot of the same activities together and just modify those activities so students again whose IP testing accommodation indicate he kept all our portfolio should apply for this particular our program and this is for grades seven through 12 that same week we have a second through sixth grade elementary camp we talked about we do pack adaptive Tech a lot of socialization with your basic living a lot of recreation and you were doing a lot of the same things that we've heard of these camps that you guys have already talked about you know PE they swim every day a couple years ago we were able ride the train out of here in Nashville to dinner so there's a lot of fun things that the students can do on campus that again these are students who are doing basic standardized testing better now preferably they're doing actually tnready these are some of our kiddos is some of the things that we've done the the swimming is always a huge hit the animals this year were amazing hit at the hit as well they got to feed them pack them it was just it was the best and then here's our elementary camp we did cooking we made ice cream it's like different sports activities we did Dancing music so it was a lot of fun for this group and this group was a little bit smaller this year traditionally there is a long waiting list for kids to get in and you sure it was just a little different I think parents were nervous about their students you know their children coming just because of coded like that they want to keep them home a little bit longer but we had a great time this year week 2 is our Sports Camp so a lot of those activities that you heard about speak different camps we do those same things it's for Rising 7th to 12th grade in high school and we do by Pacific Sports obviously but against swimming track and field goal ball beat baseball archery at swimming on there twice so we swim a lot Fitness we have bowling Mission order track and field events of golf golf there's just so many things that that we do with the students and they loved it if you haven't seen gold ball yet that is definitely one to get into the student closet things that that's also the time where we go and I skate as well yes yes we we definitely and the kids absolutely love that there's there's no charge water and ice skater there are track and field with a lot of fun this particular student the parent was very very nervous about their child coming and he end up coming two weeks and absolutely fell in love with sports being able to do Sports so that was definitely a success knowing he can be successful at that here he is again there's our ice skating your skull ball here we did just team competitions lots of fun with mr. Allen right there hanging out with Jocelyn week 3 is 7 through 12th grade middle school high school Camp so we still do Sports here but we chose last year to kind of focus on a lot of ECC skills in terms of we gave the kids some option music and theater orientation Mobility Works learning independent living assisted the majority of the students wanted support cuz if I can't use on like daily living and were based learning so we have a lot of opportunities for students to cook and we actually went out to rest and bought lunch and drinks giving them the money to be able to do things like that I we did some adaptive text is there maybe he would have been three or four kids that really wanted to learn more about technology so we pulled them out and small group we brought in a health and beauty expert and she came in and talked to the interested students just about taking care of themselves and different products that they could use so it was it was a great week but again that Focus not specifically on sports that we still swim every day and this is one of the years that we one of our favorite days it's usually either Wednesday or Thursday we go to park and we stay the whole day at the park and we do cookouts activities I think most that day I put about 17,000 steps on my Fitbit it we walk a lot while we're there but the kids love it it's beautiful just walking around at the water and bridges and things and likes a different but that's a really fun day and we've been doing that in the kids asked about it pretty much every year here is you see them there's part of that where they were at the at the park again here there's our bowling alley find at the school we did physical fitness I think we did yoga we did Zumba and hear Kevin that's cracking me up down here I love that and the little picture that sound the bottom left so one of the really fun things that we get to do oh here's goalball they did piano dancing what is fun things we get to do every Friday we have developed mr. Joyner kind of got the relationship going with Nashville Shores so every Friday we take a field trip Nashville Shores they open up the park for us at like 8 8 a.m. 8 a.m. and we get to stay like an hour and a half hour 45 minutes there's no one else in the park but us so it's we take extra chaperones with us the kids some of the kids get on you know the slides that they've never done stuff like that before but the smiles on these faces of these girls that's why I put them there they had never been to they absolutely loved it so here's some down here in the bottom left those are our kids on the slide that there I hear other games that they have done as well music the friendship 22 girls down the bottom right they just love each other and they only see each other at Camp time oh I need to plug in my computer and then here's our number pictures from Nashville Shores yes they just have these are the ones from this past summer they have a blast of this in the elementary group The Sports Group and then here's a life group just a couple of things fax we run Camp so a student we like plan to be a residential we like them to stay we like them to have that opportunity to know what it's like to kind of be on their own after you know operate around the facility is not Millions name but if they choose to do add a camper they can do that but we have staff that consisting of myself Mr Joyner and probably about 35 other people we come in from 7:45 to 3:30 Monday through Thursdays and Fridays at the half day we do activities on and we register students on on Sunday so they can come in and spend Sunday night at Camp Mr Joyner said participation meals and lodging know the cost of families of each camp Heather and then Transportation here's the Big Bend Transportation is the responsibility of the parents to be able to get them there and we will encourage them to be on time so I we've had some issues with that and I asked faculty and staff of TSB oversee the daily operations sometimes we do have volunteers that come in and participate as well but they have background checks and all those things teachers who working on Vision endorsement are also like we said present and we have a full-time 24 hours nursing staff and school security important dates so we are meeting with our director schools week from Monday to to nail down exactly we're hoping the applications going to go live on Fay Grady 18th the due date for the application is going to be just two months after that April 14th the reason being like I said there are so many pieces of paperwork all that paperwork comes through me first and it has to be exactly everything has to be together before I can send it to the clinic and in the clinic has to go through every piece of it if they're even missing a yes or no on one line they will send it back to me and I have to send it the Paragon that's why if you do know one of your parents are going to have their child come to Camp I love for you is the TV I to look over that paperwork before it comes to us that would be terrific and there's a lot of forms I'm going to have to say it the application for Camp itself and then the clinic itself there about 10 forms per child for the clinic to be able to come there's a student information medical form copy of insurance form copies being is Asian a physical exam that has to be done on our form current medications list medical providers over-the-counter meds specialty forms that has asthma allergy stink like that all of those forms have they fill out for every single student this is a big piece and he and I talked about here's the deal with physical so let's say a student had a physical May 31st but camps like a 2020 and Camp starts on June 6th that's more than a year apart for the time they had the physical and when Camp is so the physical is not going to be current it has to be within a Amy's license also have to be courage if a student is part of a family where they don't do any zacian we can work with that with a note from the parent but it still has to be on file and that piece one thing we encourage parents is when they get their physical to go ahead and take all this medical forms to the doctor with just makes it a lot quicker to get that and they can fax it to us email it to us there's lots of ways to get us that information this is Annie and I were talking about what to put on the PowerPoint and one of the biggest concerns that we've had is medications whatever the student takes in terms of medication so let's say it's a this happened this past summer it's a cream that they put on her ex, that they have to put on every night traditionally the prescription label is on the box that the cream comes in we need the box with the prescription that it comes in because otherwise it's just a 2 but it doesn't have anyone's name on it it doesn't say that it's within. medication has to be in the original label so I can't have just I'm going to put you 10 pills out another bottle and send those it has to be the actual bottle that has the students name a current prescription and it fixed even missing one medication they cannot say it has to be every single medication that they take last year we had a student Wesson came from East Tennessee had to go back home and get the stuff I needed and drive back again but if they had to do that and when we it was a lot of work to get the batsuit it needed to be here so we were all willing to put in but then again one thing also if there's a specific medication that a child doesn't take during the summer but they take it during the school year but it's listed on the doctor's orders they're going to have to have new doctor's orders to make sure we're giving the students exactly what they are supposed to have this is the biggest hang-up for getting students to camp just making sure the contact information is current we need that I condition information and like I said some parents leave it blank we need the tvi information we would love to contact you to let you know your student is coming to Camp hey it's it's a great way of connecting you but also to make sure that helps us understand who the child is before they even get here final things we do let them know submission to the application doesn't guarantee acceptance into Camp once everything turn Dan then I myself or Andy will email the parent and say we are confirming your child has a place to stay at camp we have to closely monitor numbers for safety due to you know we are down Dental staff right now but stay with their students were even having to adjust how many students can stay on campus at TSB so if we don't have enough staff to stay in the Cottages we can't let a steak so we really have to monitor the numbers and an applications aren't complete until every single document is submitted and I do have families to put as much at one time as I can cuz I teach full-time and doing summer camp and teach it to Rebecca and have prom. There's a lot going on so the more that parents can get this in at one time the better off they are but it is something that I can say that I truly enjoy doing and it's it's great we are goal between any and I we meet and say what could we do better than a year so that is kind of tsp in a nutshell for Camp so question it's like I hope you can hear kind of excitement in my voice I love I love doing it the meeting of students from across the state of Tennessee and what we've seen and Alex has the number of students that transfer here after they've come to Camp is starting to increase quite a bit we have quite a few students who came in this year due to some and camp that they've been in the last year so I and we in the fact that they know kids when they get here is really cool I know when adult awareness do name Carly who just came I mean you want to smile she is so quiet at camp can get her to talk you couldn't get her to do anything and we got to know her can't was she's one of my Masters this year she is a hoot she's one of the funniest kids I have ever met but you would have just because it's been great she sent me an e-mail email about something and she said now I don't want you to take that I was trying to be sassy to you about that I was just saying like it was you would never expect that from Carly's so but she it's so fun to talk to get to know the kids from around the state but like I said we we love it and we just asked the parents getting information early because it helps us as well it takes us about six weeks to nail down all that paperwork and stuff so we just really need your help and get that in where's the kangaroo I had pictures of the kangaroo I could have a video we had a we had a animal people that came and the kangaroo got loose and jumped all over campus for about 20 minutes before somebody caught it so that was pretty fun and it was a baby kangaroo what like maybe a year old or something but yeah I forgot I had to go is a kangaroo a lot of it is something that's very near and dear to our we just we just want to get better every year questions about tsp Camp Andy Allen you guys are welcome to jumped in and billing in you can knock out most of paperwork at your doctor's office if you just bring in those pieces of paper when you get your physical all of those papers could be knocked out in one trip if if they go to the doctor and get their physical before mr. Allen and mr. Do we have like a listserv now that's updated of the tdi's a large majority yes what we traditionally do is we send that out on the list how to say here's that information you've gotten our information the last couple years from Camp you'll get it again but we just kind of want to keep it we get a lot of return e-mails where it had been cleaned up but you can specifically email Andy and I paid you or like I said February look on the website all the paperwork will be there awesome definitely Tammy it was easy to see I'm already thinking about their way I can help out to maybe in the future cuz it just looks like a lot of fun so the more the merrier Tammy and Andy thank you so much for talking about yes please and Erin Melissa any chance about the reminder the link to the survey if you want to seebacher need a certificate I'm for any of your credentials the opening code was summer and the closing code with if you need it so
