we're going to record the session we have I'm so excited today so this is a presentation by the unity Virtual Academy which is a collaboration between Tennessee School for the Blind Tennessee chapter of Aer and the Vanderbilt programming visual disabilities I'm Doctor resource awesome the program coordinator of the program and I am so excited to be opening up for dr. Aaron Blankenship who's going to be presenting on conducting quality essential assessments particularly in these covid times and how we can do our best to do virtual assessments first unit I'm so what I'm going to do is in the chop box I'm going to drop a link we offer both just a regular certificate of attendance as as our acvrep credits so if you're looking for credit the opening code is virtual and I'll have a condition I'm we welcome you even if you don't need us for forget to give us feedback on this island so thank you all for coming here today and dr. Karen please take away so much of a tribute for teachers and this is not to say that his conscience teacher that's not important but we're talkin trying to really about the content as a teacher and thinking about the car so just so if I ask please check your connection or use a different speaker supplements so they get organized you can get ahead so the chat box for me cuz I'm going to ask questions and I kind of want you to raise your hand or just put the end from the chat box or you can unmute whatever Rachel thinks is organized in a manner that would be everybody so different asking you to the app abuse for teachers as soon as you can. Why is you keep each specially designed instruction works with your own with Fidel so how much time do you think that you spend during your work not work year I'm conducting an assessment as it Karen thinking about your work near your work much what's the percentage of time spent in completing assessment compared to teaching specially-designed instruction would you think it's 1098-e what's you know I've had too many eyes tell me that they only have 15 minutes doing stuff so it's really all over the place because we have no snow so just thinking about you know how much I'm spend and completing assessment because we can't do anything tonight we can't like an adult and I can't teach if we haven't done so in the central assessment process we have eligibility from the airport and we have entitlement from the examples Bassman remember I didn't say is true, you have to now there's a disability and then you have to show there's an impact so your assessment is the impact on the issue and its access to the general curriculum it's reading and learning media is data driven instruct it is key and completing your eye keys and thinking about what you're going to cheat so we start here and I kind of wanted to share a little bit about how the title special assessment came about I was on an international committee thanking about why teachers CBI across the country they weren't teaching Forks Trickum so we talked about that is part of it so it was it's been a long conversation so we were talking about we thought oh we don't really have a stamp so that's really think about that and then we moved on working groups and we came up with that you can't do expanded Core Curriculum you can't do the assessment and the assessment separate if your itinerary drive you crazy you think you're nothing to do an observation and demonstration so we were thinking it really is we have to do it again cuz this is really important so then we my mouth was a charm and again that's been around since about 2005 that's what I thought when I was working with grad student because I think also shares about I don't think Chico and other still understand the complexity of and I would say that their formal because again very clear this is the assessment you do for the second prong you cannot say that a child continues to have a big old tournament unless you complete so it's really am every three years you do a new essential substance to show that the second prong is still being matched and I don't know about you guys but I have had students that the past cuz I've been doing this for such a long time teams talked me into making them eligible for Google payment because they probably had a reading disability and nobody else is working with them and so this is really important I have had school districts that conducted the IP and used dolls from the year before and then let me share my updated and did eligibility without looking at this aspect if anybody has anyone else experience that were people we have some folks he's staying yet yes and yes in all caps will! because again we need to have the same verbiage were talking about you this is a formal assessment we have tools that have been determined by our field to be critical there are components of this that are in the law that are dated rubbing and so this is a shoes for us to do this assassin is sure that we are going to walking Archie and when was sharing with people how important assessment is so you get time to do it and time to write it up so that we have a quality assessment that really drive all the programs the programme for students and so this is super super important and I think a high level so you know that's why we work so hard on training and doing things like today to talk about it and then we're going to talk about how so documentation of determination it may not be a result of poor instruction and reading and math or English lack of English proficiency is done every three years unless the team deemed it unnecessary and then this gave us a wormhole that unfortunately people have used to their advantage of not but only time that you probably wouldn't need to do new Irish sport or a new sea I can't imagine another scenario where you wouldn't want to do now we get some different how many parts of the lalman here and of course the screening and talk to the FBI yeah I've had students who lost their Vision pretty dramatically or I can tell if there have been changes and you'd want to go ahead and do another second you don't want to wait for that which is not being very I'm trying to develop a program so the instructional Continuum everything I've had TV eyes tell me that they didn't have time for his basement and I asked because you can't cheat with that incessant that's why you know we all it's over the blind the first two weeks of school every year are just so we're doing our princess was trying to figure out where the student yet and where we want them to be assessment Drive every we have a question from the from someone asking if you could just what you said about the only time you would not do a reassessment I was just thinking of a scenario and this is just off the top of my head where you wouldn't need to do wire it for a child and saw me where they didn't have eyeballs your vision is not going to change and so maybe you wouldn't ask for a new Eye Health before it and you wouldn't have to do an FDA but majority of our students have received their not so we want to know him that use colors and travel and they use lights and know when they're coming from a room that's classroom out some small way so I can even with our cities with the lowest amount of dish and we're still trying to figure is there anything that they can use in their environment that is harassing chat CBI started in essential assessment in September and still has not finished due to being in person at times at Virtua at others she says she knows you may address this later in the presentation but just wanting to know what if possible to start over or continue even though there's been a break-in time is interviews observations and demonstration so all the interviews can be done and we'll get to that for sure and some of the observations like we were just talking with a teacher and the teacher who hasn't had the child in the classroom this year because I've been virtual since the start and so maybe you ask observations from the teachers before television it that's not going to talk to you in the class so some of the song I don't know if you could set it up like Suzanne where the parents set up the situation for her working in June and that's when you're doing Zumba for teens for some of the platform to have the parents that it or you could watch the student do something I don't know who's that would work to just gents but it would work for intermedia near and we have to think about Justin's but I think he's probably still some good information from September some school districts in Florida parents breaks his back into the building one at a time for assessment I don't know if it's a possibility from your school district or not but there I think there's going to be something that you just cannot do virtually and why look what I what I did at the end guys and I'll show you all the different components and what I thought we could do but will continue throughout the presentation but those are really I know you everybody's sick of hearing unprecedented times but they are we've never had this before and thinking about because typically you know about and then we've got I said 60 days to finish it and there's just no way with what's going on now we can stick to that song another question there are many questions I think probably fill the whole two hours with just question for you do you want to get to a certain point in your PowerPoint and then pause for questions or do you want to keep me keep throwing questions at people I think if there something specific so let me get through this and then I'll go through for you if that's okay thank you Karen remind you that it's these are just talking about academic and functional but you already know this is important because even through IV evaluation and so I don't know about you but as a learner I have to figure this I have to construct it in my head and figure out so what I did I did a lot of reading a majority of what I read in the literature said specimens what a student knows or can do right but I am going to minimize microchips of it rains or taking over I can't see my flight so sad when a student knows where can do it guide your programming and instruction and an evaluation compare the students achievement was a set of Standards such as a base measures did I make a difference in my this tells us what the child needs to learn where they are and then let evaluation Keys again is what difference are we making because again that we have no real we have no evidence based practice so we've got to show that what we do and that's how I do my hair today is the front end evaluations the back an assessment in the process of documenting usually and miserable charms knowledge skills is it continuous that's not an evaluation or integrated into all aspects both teachers and students with relevant and useful data to gave process progress in determining material and procedures. Starting no crowd the essential assessment guys hovers the functional assessment and of course in Texas is called a functional Vision evaluation at the number I think there's another state that uses that term as well but I was taught and you know I started in 1976 I started the program in 1972 and that's how we did not have functional assessment in 76 we were just starting to do i t and I still remember where we had training think Maria did it where is Sanford who wrote The Empty on a book at that we were all there and we all got the black forest and then we didn't have the right Matthias that's so it was quite a while after 76 before we got there so it covers the Arbors of learning media segment Salon e media also include a basic reading inventory and you need to do reading and listening a lot of teachers are doing a basic reading inventory for their classrooms and if you have a teacher that's done that's wonderful and that's one less thing you don't have to do that I bet they didn't do the listening at that they just did the reading and listening right now and s*** is the Jerry John because you can get to Jerry Johnson for the blind in Braille and in large print was trying to save you some time but it keep on the reading specialist they're recommended quantitative qualitative rating in the well and it's more it's long do children have to read longer and when you did a comparison we did a comparison with John afford Antoine year between the Jerry John's and Q are odd and the Q R I gave you a more realistic measure of where they were for the Jerry John's they were trying to write the irons and the grade level on PRI so that's the recommendation is easier to use the Jerry John's Janet Braille and in large print probably and a lot of States there's their material centers have already done all the files for the q r i n e so you could use those files and there's a question in the chart of what about students to assess like emergent literacy skills you aren't reading text you I have that rapid in Rapid sound name so that rereading it just doesn't student know all their letters student murder sounds so it's a really nice kind of early reading to see where the kids are with your letters and their side and help to be on that one of the one of the resources I have for you is those reading skills for children with complex bothering me and I'm going to share that with you because comes out of the Washington Century disability there are groups in Washington and it is really great because it takes a definition of reading broader for chest you may not meet and so I'll share that with so there is that basic rapid letter naming and Rapid found naming and the Woodcock Johnson Dino do all the reading research Advanced as well as another question Rachel nope okay then if we kept thinking about 18 years acquire so you know on the front of the IP and you have to ask yourself the question chip technology needed well for kids are going to be prepared if it's their way of accessing the environment so we trying to put this under learning media assessment just things like it's the right place to put it to make sure that every child has a chi assessment as part of your sinful assessment because it's required I know it's hard to see but I think because mysterious or another assessment so I think she has to be addressed and by pulling it out and putting it in l m a mom shoots think about that more explicitly than just keeping it one of the nine. So that's where we went and a cheetah speed we did a template and we were so thankful that Alan HD Guru did a little training section on the template to remind you of what questions to ask about a check and I talked about that message Wadi other resources are you on do you want to talk a little bit about how you decided what you put in there I think he's on but I might be wrong and then the last thing again this is what we will get to that I'll talk little bit but we have to screen and then assess and the Erika party areas so that's just part of and so Donnie principles for a second it's routine raised questions with significant disabilities always includes families and give them a voice it adheres to the riot model and the riot model stands for interviews observations and then testing both formal and informal and again there are probably diagnosticians who would say our assessments are not normal but they are they're accepted by Bastille the FBI May from a t h by Stanford and Burnett is the most widely used protocol to use for the felma so this is really important these are the tools were using and so as a field with Travis tan just stay within the there were using that tool there are different protocols tools and strategy for bearing age Acuity and ability levels unfortunately say Amen to that just not something you can pull off the shelf that makes the needs of every charge it's just not so we have to think about all the different protocols and tools and strategies you think we have to think about this specific child and that's where we start to look at what makes sense and we pulled it together if we're going to get information from families we're getting mashed mashed information from the students themselves there a key partner and it has to be valid and reliable the sense of their own hair there's a lot of options out there I really don't have any validity and reliability for children heart of because I'm also a national co-chair of the national agenda in 2006 I think the last time it was done the international Lions International lions Club maybe can't remember it was in New York City and they took every assessment they looked for reliability and validity for sensible Harriman and they put it on their website but it hasn't been updated since 2006 so it's been a long time but it was like 230 pages but it told you what part of the assessment that you could maybe but you couldn't adapt it's a great resource and I from Lighthouse thank you but of course like everything it was not it was decided that it was just not cost effective to spend the time to update but it was a great resource I say it has to be conducted over nearest day with various times of the day and environment that's what you're learning maybe assessment you're looking to see is there a difference because we know our kids have been is there a difference in the morning compared to the afternoon when do they shut down when do you know that visually it's. and then that's one of the things that we recommend to move to auditory or plant so that they don't have that I'm even like with the LMAO that wants 15 observable Behavior so it's like five different settings three different times so you're looking at a lot of different day I just activated just trying to thing not myself that it probably takes a good 28 hours to do a quality assessment in writing so it's not something that can be done in 15 minutes it's not something you can do in a day it would be something that you can't just do one day you want to come back to four times so for me I always structured on my calendar so I knew that you was going to have to have them the next year and I would set out an action plan for myself of course. Your last paper and it was colored but just trying to keep running pace for myself so I would know to go observe during PE so just making sure they're organized and can spread that various times and again it's family-centered and routine baits for birthday. It's really important families are part of it so the right model again music family students teachers and other related service providers again interviews and making sure you have so making sure you have my voice observations in the garage educational home this is when you can partner with your certified or injection to get some information about the best part of their assessment informal and formal and then keep once everything begins with assessment assessment for program planning soap to develop an action plan again that's what I recommend just to keep us on track is to look at what protocols you need to pool what tools but material how many people are using the new note from a pH the big hit anybody do you mean those kits that I have all sorts of different sort of manipulatives what not now it's the it's the black and Cheryl in the library all the nooks and it is supposed to be a partner with the Fel Fel and something dollars well we start we got quite a few of them so you can use I found it lacking and so what I still wanted to get that I did plus the news so but the new just have a lot of fun for Amanda and Josh Mandy Black and Josh Harper did a presentation last year Unity on the new on the couch together and it was a really good message so there are materials out there to help because you know I used to have to get my own and you have to pull your material then I think everybody still go to the dollar store for your s*** and there's very little you can use in the dollar store to do this so in it's about when I when I created the kit and pulled it together it was probably close to $700 but in the old days we used to have BP money and so every year we need to add to a kit and that kind of helped us build up a pretty decent assortment of tools cheese and then if you don't know where you're going you'll probably end up somewhere else and I think that is so true within a cell you can't eat without knowing what to teach you can't do it, dacians without knowing what the child is using so it's really important for us to do list the FBI is how well this is used to performing daily activities and a variety of sight and so you know they have some color vision they know different colors and they could use that for travel or not going to use it efficiently in classroom but they could use it to travel that you need or small so you want to know how well do using your vision and white boards are they using play not using the old green chalkboard with the chalk on it so how often do they show videos what do the handouts look like the teacher gives out so don't try to do does might require looking in the classroom week to look on to join a virtual session and stay with the teachers using for the virtual session and help with you know what we need to think about implant or was that virtual session you have to observe how student uses their Vision to complete daily activities with the writing materials and you identify me to the combination and I know there was a time when we were just and now we have to be more never did we have to show that that's going to make a difference and then we're going to find ways to increase efficiency so we're looking at that hopefully using the low vision specialist are they using optical device are they using a handheld a lighted magnifier or what are they doing for intermediate and as I get older I'm having to think about all three for myself the protocols guys and I think Sanford Burnett I don't think I have the most up-to-date and I don't know 2010 but it comes from American printing house for the blond and brunette Felman and it's a protocol and then Sandra brunette Jen a wonderful one but they didn't publish it because it's same time they were using it so I said well I say and a big box and there were three different notebooks in there and I know some teachers have use kiss them parts of it and but most people have not used it has not gotten to school project so the FPL automatic response just left this was just a little bit easier to use and I say that China's balls the same procedures that Maria and Rebecca and the other protocols so that's the one I was using and got permission from the music cuz it is I want to talk a little bit about the Braille law and we just now we are free not every three or four years we going to another letter i g a two thousand four years of Braille in Most states have followed and have their own bread as well so it says in the Charles is blind or instruction and Braille and the use of Braille unless the eye after an evaluation of the child's reading and writing you appropriate reading and writing media including thinking about the future needs of the style that Braille is not the most efficient and so again this is not so this is the learning videos. we are required by law to have some sort of formative assessment to show what is the best media for this child as we've gone from when I first started we were cops I'd say teachers and the resource room would turn the lights on and I think it's his business same thing every child we didn't have like they were on Saturday and then with the research by Natalie Derek about using your vision actually improved your thing back in the sixties then we saw things change but we think they used to think Barnes preserve what didn't they had and so just like everything else and education so we went from a labral probably to know Brown and now we're probably more looking at the Ella Mae and hopefully there's more than one media in a toolbox so for our kids with retinitis Pigmentosa we know that they're going to lose her vision so maybe there's some brown your toolbox so looking at this I think more academically on and now we're required assessment to show the name but this is it's just hard because if they have right now and they're not in opposition in Braille so they're not sufficient for the song down in Brainerd you're not proficient in Braille so you're going to have to use your expertise and your Professional Knowledge to say you know I know that we don't have the bread but I think you're going to need it and thinking about you know how to balance and then on top of that most students in college are using Auto so when do we move she's me from Braille to auditory or some brown Sprint combination with other devices or video to audio so again there's a lot we have to think that there's a lot that shoulders F professional for the rest of their lives and then the learning media staff has it that it was developed in 1995 by A & K Holbrook and it has now been updated a little bit about the central truth so it's been applied in the new resource from chassis of the Blind and Visually Impaired but it's an objective process of systematically selecting learning and literacy media reading and writing or it's a series of observations and assessment to determine primary secondary tertiary sensory channels material in other words and the protocols and Holbrook I don't know why but it's the blue book assessment by chance be bi and again and then learning s*** and they are the process it's not already updated it supposed to be in it and then there's the basic reading inventory and then even though there's a new tool out from Texas. published or whatever to you sound it's still the most popular and we did about four different views and we used a rubric on what the literature says when I feel that we should we applied it to every commercially available material and found the stanford-binet and then the next closest was Vision Associates and there was only like 36 so Sandra Burnett still has most of the areas that are required to review chicken doctor parties and then City assessment brunch at 5 you're going to use the sensory channels include Stanley's you do a general learning media because actually what they're asking you to do is to start thinking about are you going to do formal letter C and 4 literacy and I cannot put on use a teacher to have good data backup and indicators and then the S okay for students with severe cough disability they're looking at what are the motivation for students what are the what is the things they like what are they too and so that's really important to think about and then it's the other remember we talked auditory and visual for kids with different significant disabilities because they used more senses when they're when they're working so some students love to swing or to spend other students don't so that becomes things that you think about a story airing my dirty laundry so we were doing videos at Texas with the blind so we had sourced units all different ability levels all different Acuity levels and we were videoing so we were there for about a week and we're a video and so I was doing and it smells so and so I feel the blueberry stuff all over the map and just then I just ruined the whole every different sorts of stamps anymore in the old days so responsible and cautions and modification observation record and then there's the lights and dislikes from Washington and I'm going to show you that it's here and there Four Seasons well and then the functional learning media checklist which is number 8 on the L M A and on the rich guys that are in the Dropbox Michelle all this gym how to organize but it has the page numbers and the resource in the roofer to remind you what to look at so you get a prompt and you don't have to think about this so for 5 to 22 years of age looking at general student information use of sensory channels Gemma learning media checklist on three and form two indicators are Readiness which is form for initial selection of which the media literacy tools inventory form 7 and I know our technology people things right and helping still out there and where kids are no can they use the keyboard so he and Allen's tools in the template but I'll have to send it to you so basic reading inventory Jerry John's in for both of those it's the same thing it's reading and listening comprehension what grade level are they reading on and get remember we want it to be at instructional independent because we're not going to be in there with so you can do a functional level but that doesn't really tell us anything we want to go to threshold for independent and instructional and then it's correct words per minute I used to do just work the minute that was thinking about how many wet and so it's rare rest for a minute and then you see see what's my favorite topic. because I think he's worked on to help us and again when it became a TR and AMC in central Harkins office so they were in there frequently advocating for the easy seem to be part of ideas and so Julie Carter who wrote she said I agree I agree but we can't use that term because it's so disability specific so she put in functional action and there is a long history of how functional apps it didn't even thought so it required by law for us and you have to go out and just quickly on transition your ACC assessment are perfect for transition so it requires additional areas of learning necessary for possibly. experiences in concert again most of those areas are learned by other students by so that they can see how their parents I was just do it but we can't do that these skills must be systematically is sequentially part of the nearest such a specialized unique in the early days of the Selma Maria Rebecca called and unique skills was just calling to be seasick so it has but basically some of the same but what you did was he gave us a framework in 1996 which is very exciting so when I had to I had to think about meeting the needs of students with muscle impairments in Iowa I came back to our field because I thought we had it done so they need to be taught explicitly and sequentially so once I get foundational skills you can you know you can just do reinforcement but somebody somewhere is that a cheap suspended it's not new it's been around since 89 ice all references in literature from 1929 to 1948 so it's been around a long time since the other area so it's just it's not new but it's been trying and I was just shocked since it was formed in 1995 and I still need teachers who are told that they can't teach it so it's just shocking that all these years were still struggling and just to remind you that the nine areas are assistive technology and then I just checked on boarding everybody gets keyboard but aren't you and sometimes we teach that in kindergarten earlier station which includes transition if you're still using the academic that has not been since 2010 so be sure that that's has been gone for so if my head is it's what the child. being frail literacy and so is it is they need to talk Bennett Independent Living orientation Mobility Recreation leave yourself my favorite which includes both auditory visual impact it used to be just seeing if you're still using a protocol that all three of those and that was that was due to no Matthew said that she can't just have this one you have to have to have to work together and so we change that 2010 so it's just a technology as part of its access to information communication personal productivity tools and students if it is offered to most students find the general curriculum but the stakes are so children accessing things that are colored how did that have hot buttons that you have to pick to answer so is I like the way she explained it was awareness preparation preparation placement think about it where is like in kindergarten but then you start floor because we want students to know that there is a whole world out there all days are students going to be ham radio operators and then they wanted to be social workers so they need to know that there are tensions floor and then starts repair you want to be stressed that getting work or gone to the last two years of high school they're more likely to be employed play Lauren does employability skills course materials it depends living is organization personal hygiene and grooming there is a neutral out and I don't know if you seen it but it was developed and I think and it is a nice location to Cheney I so it is a wonderful resource to think about if I can change it or not wreck in Leisure you're wanting them to have some sort of fitness and things with that you do long-term your life and is self-determination is there are combination of he has knowledge and beliefs that a neighbor person's engage in Gold directed self-regulated autonomous Behavior so I always like I like the definition by Phil's Martin Warden and in they use a different definition and we found that there are seven and reused the research by Eric hartter and Kathleen Lane to talk about the seven different front struts and then what teachable skills come under the research shows that you can't teach a child to self determine what you can teach these constructs and these skills so there's also I'm in the in the resource guys a rubric that Christina Von Ryan based on This research that is really nice to use I know Johnny a lot and he really likes it just about the stove and she kind of measure where they are and I pray she is all of the channels and so research supports a multi-modal Roche College Station for all kids we should be working on their listening skills skills and their skills and then Primary Learning modes of the secondary gustatory receptors so and then and then start tonight and that statement I love this has been a bowels this whole Continuum where you know that there's something on your fingertips then you can start to scream that you can start to have to be able to learn learn to use that for information so you're moving along attention you like I know that there's something there but I need to figure out what it is and then it becomes more complex as they get older because our tax brackets they are very complex for high school students in college in South socialism body language social communication but they didn't really know about the dogs and chips and friendships and you have to monitor social interaction any of you ever read the editorial pages of it to send out Hubbard Lewis I think he got so excited when Suzanne that nodding his head with the same thing as saying yes he didn't have to say it so and then report writing destroyed there's no spelling and it's written specially tools for selecting student I know we got people from across the country not just Tennessee is everyone come up with the template to use for your own School District or for your own division provision anything right I'm just going to encourage you if you're not using a template or if you have not signed something that you think so important is that really is your values and that lets people know that no matter who's coming in a new hire or that you're all doing the same thing cuz I know everyone is I've gotten from other states with so coming up with
